Aluminum scale

I have tried all kinds of self sticking rulers and scale in my kayaks, only to find that they peal off in a short time.  I recently saw an aluminum yard stick mounted to the side of a power boat which gave me this idea.

Required Items:

            Aluminum yard stick

            Drill

            Drill bit (diameter of pop-rivet)

            Pop-rivets (grip length as needed)

            Pop-rivet puller

            Sealant

Step one:

Cut the aluminum yard stick to length needed.  Here I cut it in half since in Louisiana the minimum size for Redfish is 16 inches, I can get two 18 inch scales from one yard stick

 Step two:

Drill three holes equally spaced in the scale.

Step three:

Hold the scale in the area to be mounted and adjust as needed.  The scale may need to be curved slightly to match the contour of the kayak, which can be done easily by forming over your thigh.  With the location and fit are good, use the center hole in the scale to drill into the kayak.

Step four:

Apply sealant to the back side of the scale.  Carefully reposition the scale back in the kayak and secure it with a pop-rivet.  Adjust the scale for level if needed; drill the remaining holes and install pop-rivets.
